Drooping Nerveleaf is a small shrub, about 2-3 ft tall. Leaf-stalk 0.5-2 cm; leaf blade somewhat leathery and green, broadly elliptic or obovate, 10-25 x 6-14 cm, above hairless, below finely velvet-hairy at least on veins, base pointed to narrowed, tip abruptly tapering. Veins are almost horizontal, closely spaced, 15-20 pairs; stipules triangular-lanceshaped, 10-20 mm. Flowers are in a spherical congested cyme at branch-ends or in leaf-axils, 2.5-6 cm in diameter. Flower-cluster-stalk is short; bracts ovate or lanceshaped, 8-15 mm, tapering. Calyx is hairless to rough; limb lobed to base; sepals linear-lanceshaped, 1.0-1.2 cm. Flower are white or yellow, tubular, outside finely velvet-hairy; tube 5-6 mm; petals ovate, about 2 mm. Berries are fleshy to dry, 4-7 mm in diameter, becoming hairless. Drooping Nerveleaf is found forests at altitudes of about 700 m, in NE India, Bangladesh, Bhutan. Flowering: March-April.
Medicinal uses: Cut pieces of stem are kept in water, and transparent juice which oozes from the cut is used as eyedrops for various eye diseases.
